Protecting Your Data from WannaCry Ransomware
WannaCry Ransomware is a rising threat
against both business and home users that targets computers and network-based
devices. A simple yet effective method of mitigating the threat of ransomware
is to ensure that you always have up-to-date, remotely-stored backups. TerraMaster
NAS is an ideal backup center that includes comprehensive backup features and
supports point-in-time snapshots to help individuals and organizations protect
important data, restore files, and avoid downtime.
What is WannaCry?
It's the name for a prolific hacking attack
known as "ransomware," that holds your computer hostage until you pay
a ransom.
The way it works is that once it infects a
computer, it encrypts -- or basically scrambles -- all the data. Then the
program puts up a screen demanding you pay money to get access back. Typically
the price increases over time until the end of a countdown, when the files are destroyed.
How do I protect my machine?
If you're running a Windows-powered PC,
make sure all your software is up to date. In addition, as always, do not open
suspicious emails, click on links you don't know or open any files you weren't
expecting.

files
While the first line of defense against
being affected by malicious software is being careful and practicing sensible
usage habits (regularly updating your software, not opening untrustworthy
emails, not visiting unknown websites, etc), you should always remember to back
up your data.
